Not just a hobby, it's a way of Life

Fair warning

If you’re already in a bad mood, this post won’t help.  Just skip to the last paragraph.

Jenny from the Blog and I are blaming the weather on this funk.  It feels bigger than that, though – it feels planetary.  Both of us just feel meh. It better not be 2006 cleverly disguised as 2010.  I can’t do that year again.

The degree – it’s not done.  Saying anymore about that is pointless, because that’s all I know.  What I turned in – well, I’ve never heard a word about it, other than I have an incomplete in the class and must ‘finish culminating project’.  I don’t know if any part of it was good or not.  There’s just no feedback.  I’m not really in a good frame of mind right now, so I don’t really care to push at the moment.

In this economy, I know that I am very lucky to have a job.  The flip side of that is the very thing that allows us to keep working – tremendous growth – is the very thing that is slowly draining the life out of us.  Since winter break, we haven’t been taking breaks like we should, working straight through just to ‘get done’, but we don’t get done, then we’re all just burnt out and mentally exhausted.  We depend on other departments just as overwhelmed as we are to do part of our job, and everything feels like it’s a snargled-up mess that’s not moving.  And I’m not entirely sure when it became perfectly acceptable to verbally abuse people to get your way, but it needs to stop.  I need out of a customer-service oriented position, but of course there’s none to be had.

Knitting?  Pbthp.  Right now, I’m working on some sleeves of a cardigan.  Woo.  There are some socks I’m not liking the combo of yarn and pattern, but individually,  they are beautiful.  I kind of suspected it wasn’t going to mesh, but I had to try anyway.  I’m giving it a whole repeat of pattern (24 rows) to change my mind, then I’m cutting my losses and frogging.

And because I don’t believe in total negativity, here’s two wonderful things – Ocean Spray Cran-Tangerine and Schwan’s Sweet Cream Cheese Pretzel Poppers.  As Jenny said, it was the highlight of the week.

See, isn’t it better when I don’t blog?

Happy 2010 ten days late

Hmmm, seems I’m overdue for a post.

I had all these great plans to post over winter break, but we barely had time to turn around.  Trips to both families, plus a deer season at my mom’s, and the next thing you knew, it was time to go back to work.

Then with the semester starting tomorrow, work has been insane with everyone sending registrations at the last minute and demanding to be enrolled RIGHT NOW!!!  Yes, you and 300 other people are just discovering there’s a spring semester, like there has been since – oh, 1801 – and there are four of us.  Patience is a virtue, folks, patience is a virtue.

I still don’t know if I’m going to have to do more on my degree or not.  I’ve held off emailing my advisor, because I know he is covered under in work as much as I am, and it doesn’t do well to annoy the person determining your stuff.  It typically wins you a spot on the bottom of the pile.  Still, I haven’t bugged him about it before, so maybe I can send a gentle inquiry.  It’s hanging over my head, and I really hope my efforts have been enough for it to be done.  I know I should be interested in personal and academic enlightenment, but I just want to be done with it.

But, even when the degree is done, I’m not done learning yet.  I’m working on a database certificate.  For fun.  Yes, some people dream of being famous, I dream of being a database administrator.  After the independent wealth dream, of course.  I’ll be taking a Database Management/SQL class this term.  Whee!  Yeah, I know.  Geek.  :)  I yam what I yam.

So, as you may have been able to see on the Flickr feed, I have been knitting and spinning.  Today, I’ve been adding some of the fiber stash to Ravelry.  It helps to have everything in one spot, so you can see what you have, and realize that you really don’t need any more.  Well, you know.  I would like to try to make it to Greencastle time without adding anything to the stash, but I’m not swearing anything off.

Anyhoo, here’s what I’ve been working on:

I’m also still working on the Hayrick Socks, but I don’t have an updated progress shot.

And I spun up some corridale fiber purchased at the Greencastle Fiber Event long ago and far away, well before I figured out I don’t like corridale.  Bleh.  However, it will be fine for a hat, and that’s just what I am doing.

One fiber I have figured out I do like very much is falkland.

Okay, that’s about all the news fit to print.  If I hear anything regarding the degree, I’ll announce here.  In case you miss the scream of joy.
